We work to enhance poor people’s access to sustainable income sources and Food Security on several fronts, as this plays a key role in bringing people out of economic and abject poverty. This includes promoting sustainable agriculture and promoting community-based microfinance, particularly in rural areas. CYD focuses on strengthening the linkages between sustainable agriculture and microfinance so that savings groups become a gateway to more formal credit sources. We also emphasize capacity building and skills development as part of our livelihood interventions, and aim to link potential entrepreneurs – particularly youth – to CYD’s educational programmes, especially vocational training. Thus, CYD also increasingly aims to strengthen our target groups’ negotiation power vis-à-vis suppliers and/or buyers, support value chain development efforts and the introduction of appropriate technologies that can increase the diversity, sustainability and productivity of income generating activities and of local economies as a whole.
