The focus of Access without Fear is on adolescents of Madisi area in Dowa District in Central Malawi. Madisi is a rural area with traditional cultural practices that are associated with a high prevalence of early marriage and early pregnancy. Over three years the project is expected to reach approximately 10,000 people across the area.
The project directly targets 2,000 girls and 1,000 boys (3,000 direct young people in total) between the ages of 10 – 24 years and indirectly targets 7,000 people comprising women, men, girls and boys in the general population. The overall Goal of the project is to improve the health and well-being of adolescents in Chakhaza Area
The programme is delivered in collaboration with local partner grass root youth organisations, Chakhaza Health Centre and primary Schools in the community. The programme started in July 2013) and this is the first period reported upon. During this initial phase the programme has focussed on ensuring an effective start-up and initiating activities in several key project areas with continuance fundraising for the project.
